Checking for Updates

Deputy Shell checks Google Play for updates automatically each time you bring the app to the foreground, limited to roughly once every 24 hours, and you can also trigger a manual check from Settings at any time.

Possible states

• Up to date — nothing to do.
• Offline — Deputy Shell tells you it needs a connection to check Google Play, rather than showing a generic error.
• Unavailable — shown on installs that didn't come from Google Play (for example, sideloaded builds), since there's no Play update to check.
• Update available / downloading / ready to restart / failed — the normal stages of an in-app update.

What's preserved

Your projects, sessions, and sign-in state are designed to survive an update — active sessions become resumable rather than being silently discarded before the update finishes restarting the app.

Current limitation

The full real-world update path — going from one published Play version to the next on a real device — is still under evaluation as part of closed-alpha testing.
